ABSTRACT In order to provide information on the current knowledge about the native fish Dormitator latifrons and identify the gaps that must be filled to achieve correct resource management, a scientometric study was carried out using different scientific databases. A total of 103 publications were registered between the years 1972 and 2021. Results indicate that the species has been addressed since 2001 with less than one publication per year, with 2008 being the year with the highest number of publications (10). The main topics addressed were ecology, physiology, and parasitology of fish. The available knowledge generated about the species is concentrated in 68 journals, with Mexico as the most productive country, followed by USA and Ecuador, and the most productive research centers about this fish were Mexico’s Instituto Politécnico Nacional and Universidad de Guadalajara. A total of 285 authors were detected contributing knowledge to the species, with Violante-González in the top with ten publications. The co-authorship co-occurrence maps suggest there is no solid collaborative relationship between the scientific community and that the information generated is insufficient for conserving and exploiting this fish. It is essential to increase the study of thematic areas that allow their comprehensive management in the medium term; topics like reproduction in captivity, aquaculture, and nutrition must be addressed in the future to assure a sustainable use of this resource.

ABSTRACT The development of native fish aquaculture represents an important alternative to mitigate ecological displacement generated by exotic fish. The introduction of native fish in polyculture systems with high commercial value fishes has provided a useful strategy for sustainable aquaculture development. The present study aims to provide information on tilapia, as an exotic species, and Dormitator latifrons, as a native species, in a duo culture not programmed as such. Using juveniles of Pacific fat sleeper D. latifrons leftovers from another experiment, we decide to analyze and report the biological feasibility of a duoculture system with this species and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Two hundred fifty organisms of each species were placed for 90 days in a concrete tank with a capacity of 50 m3 to evaluate the compatibility of these species. The biological variables measured were growth, survival, feed conversion rate, and protein efficiency. The findings suggest a good interaction between species, with adequate growths and a survival rate of 98%. No antagonistic behavior was observed during confinement, suggesting the duoculture of these species may represent a good alternative for tropical sustainable aquaculture.

ABSTRACT The present work is a review of the literature on the native Mexican fish Dormitator latifrons. The aim is to contribute to the integration and systematization of current knowledge to make it easier to identify existing knowledge gaps and breakthroghs Moreover, promote the successful cultivation and protection of this species whose consumption is increasing in Latin America. A review of the articles related to D. latifrons published in international and regional databases was carried out. The articles reviewed focus on taxonomy and systematics, phylogenetic, geographic distribution, ecology, physiology, reproduction, development, pathology, health, and the technologies used to cultivate this fish species. The conclusion is that, even though the cultivation of D. latifrons is of commercial interest in some countries, there are still significant gaps in our knowledge of biology and, consequently, the domestication potential of the species. Filling these gaps will require systematic research efforts on protecting natural populations and improving mass cultivation techniques.

ABSTRACT Groups of Dormitator latifrons in triplicate (4.1 ± 2.0 g and 6.2 ± 1.0 cm) were fed experimental diets containing four levels of substitution of fishmeal (FM) by soybean meal (SM) (0, 40, 70, and 100%, respectively). The diets were formulated to be isoproteic (35% crude protein) and isolipidic (8.0% crude lipids). The effect of each treatment on growth was evaluated and its implications on the cost of feeding. After 60 days of feeding, there were no significant differences in the fish’s proximate composition (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between the diets (P < 0.05) in the evaluated biological indices: total growth increase (TGI), specific growth rate (SGR), thermal growth coefficient (TGC), and survival (%). Feeding costs decreased significantly as the proportion of soybean meal in the diet increased. The results indicated that substituting FM by up to 100% of SM can promote adequate growth in D. latifrons without affecting body composition and survival while also reducing operative costs during the fattening process.

Abstract Understanding the upstream migration of amphidromous prawns is important to address the impact of anthropomorphic activities in natural freshwater ecosystems. The ability of Macrobrachium tenellum (Smith, 1871) juveniles to overcome an artificial barrier was evaluated, simulating an obstacle in their upstream migration, under an experimental laboratory system. The prawns were collected from a stream located in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (N = 1000). An experimental recirculation system was used, which consisted of a tank with a capacity of 600 L, a sheet of galvanized steel that acted as an anthropogenic barrier and two submersible electric pumps with flows of 0.12 L/s and 0.40 L/s. In this system, two inclinations of the barrier were tested, 45° and 90° in combination with the two flows. The results show that there are significant differences between the treatments with different inclinations, where a higher stimulation response was observed at the 90° angle. Within this inclination, the flow of 0.40 L/s produced the highest stimulation to climb the barrier in prawns between 30 and 60 mm in length. This study demonstrates the direct relationship between the slope and the effect of water flow of the anthropogenic barriers that hinder the migration process of M. tenellum.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to assess the acceptance of live and inert food by Macrobrachium tenellum during the early larval stages. The larvae were obtained by collecting wild ovigerous females in the Ameca River in the State of Jalisco, Mexico. Eight treatments (diets) were used to feed the larvae: D1, control (fasting); D2, micro-pulverized food (Purina®); D3, living, newly hatched nauplii of Artemia franciscana (INVE®, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA); D4, commercial paste containing microalgae (Instant Algae Rotifer Diet®); D5, water extracted from a biofloc system; D6, cooked egg yolk; D7, newly hatched and frozen nauplii of A. franciscana (INVE®, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA); D8, nutritional supplement for shrimp larvae (Epifeed LH1®). Treatments D2, D5, D6 and D8 showed traces of food in the digestive system. The larvae did not consume D3 and D7 treatments. The diets that had more acceptance were micro-pulverized food, a nutritional supplement for shrimp larvae Epifeed® LH1, cooked egg yolk, and biofloc water.

ABSTRACT Dormitator latifrons inhabits a wide range of salinities as a result of its migratory and reproductive cycle. The objective of the study was to evaluate the physiological response time and survival to saline change under laboratory conditions. The basal gill ventilation frequency (GVF) of organisms was recorded at 33 ups (SW) and in freshwater at 0.3 ups (FW). The gill ventilation frequency of organisms that were transferred from FW-SW and inversely from SW-FW (15, 25, and 33 ups) was counted, in triplicate, for 1 minute and 1, 4, 24 and 48 h. Statistical differences (p < 0.05) were found in fish transferred from FW-SW and SW-FW at the first minute with respect to basal GVF. In all treatments the organisms recovered their GVF one hour after being exposed to saline modification. There was 100% survival in all treatments. D. latifrons has a rapid physiological response to sudden changes in salinity.

RESUMEN Dormitator latifrons habita en un amplio intervalo de salinidades producto de su ciclo migratorio y reproductivo. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar el tiempo de respuesta fisiológica y la sobrevivencia al cambio salino en condiciones de laboratorio. Se registró la frecuencia ventilatoria branquial (FVB) basal de organismos a 33 ups (AS) y en agua dulce 0.3 ups (AD). Se contabilizó la frecuencia ventilatoria branquial de organismos que fueron transferidos AD-AS e inversamente AS-AD (15, 25, y 33 ups), por triplicado, durante 1 minuto, 1,4, 24 y 48 h. Se encontraron diferencias estadísticas (p < 0.05) en los peces transferidos de AD-AS y AS-AD al primer minuto con respecto a FVB basal. En todos los tratamientos los organismos recuperaron la FVB una hora después de ser expuestos a la modificación salina. Se tuvo un 100% de sobrevivencia en todos los tratamientos, D. latifrons tiene rápida respuesta fisiológica a cambios bruscos de salinidad.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Aedes aegypti (L) (Diptera: Culicidae) is a cosmopolitan species and a vector of arboviruses. Variations in the temperature and salinity of the water affect eclosion and survival during the larval stages. Objective: Evaluate the effect of different temperatures and salinities on the eclosion of eggs and the survival of larvae, pupae and adults in laboratory conditions. Methods: Ae. aegypti larvae were collected from artificial reservoirs in a peri-urban area of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, and maintained until the adult stage. The eggs obtained were subjected to eight temperatures (15, 17, 20, 25, 27, 30, 32 and 35 °C). Fifteen eggs were placed in quintuplicate and eclosion was evaluated for 96 h. One hundred eggs were placed with water adjusted to 0.3, 2, 5, 10, 15, 18 and 22 psu and eclosion was evaluated until 96 h. Additionally, stage IV larvae were used in quintuplicate, subjecting them to the same salinities and evaluating survival until 48 h. The effect of salinity on oviposition by females was determined by introducing containers with the same salinity into the entomological cages. Results: 100 % eclosion was recorded at 24 and 48 h, whereas no eclosion occurred at a temperature of 35 °C. Salinities of 22 and 18 psu caused 100 % mortality at 24 h, whereas 50 % survived at a salinity of 15 psu. At concentrations of 2, 5 and 10 psu 100 % of the larvae survived until the adult stage. Survival of stage IV larvae in treatments 2, 5 and 10 was 100%, whereas in 15, 18 and 22 psu it fell to 50, 80 and 100 %, respectively (p˂ 0.05). The different salinities did not affect oviposition significantly. Eclosion only occurred at concentrations of 0.3, 2, 5 and 10 psu. Oviposited eggs at concentrations of 15, 18 and 22 psu did not eclose until they were transferred to fresh water, where eclosion percentages ranged between 80 % and 90 %. Conclusions: Ae. aegypti embryos have great plasticity to endure drastic changes in temperature and salinity. Effective control of their populations should include inspection of ponds and reservoirs containing brackish water of up to 18 psu.

RESUMEN Introducción: Aedes aegypti (L) (Diptera: Culicidae), es una especie cosmopolita y vector de arbovirosis. Las variaciones de la temperatura y salinidad del agua influyen en la eclosión y supervivencia de fases larvales. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de diferentes temperaturas y salinidades en la eclosión de huevos y la supervivencia de larvas, pupas y adultos bajo condiciones de laboratorio. Métodos: Se colectaron larvas de Ae. aegypti, de reservorios artificiales en la zona periurbana de Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, México, y se mantuvieron hasta la fase adulta. Los huevos obtenidos se sometieron a ocho temperaturas (15, 17, 20, 25, 27, 30, 32 y 35 °C). Se colocaron 15 huevos por quintuplicado y se evaluó la eclosión durante 96 h. Se colocaron 100 huevos con agua ajustada a 0.3, 2, 5, 10, 15,18 y 22 ups y se evaluó la eclosión hasta las 96 h. Adicionalmente se utilizaron larvas del estadio IV, por quintuplicado, sometiéndose a las mismas salinidades y se evaluó la supervivencia hasta las 48 h. El efecto de la salinidad en la ovoposición de las hembras se llevó a cabo introduciendo recipientes con las mismas concentraciones salinas, dentro en las jaulas entomológicas. Resultados: Se registró el 100 % de eclosión a las 24 y 48 h; la temperatura de 35° C no registró eclosión. Las salinidades de 22 y 18 ups, provocaron mortalidad del 100 % a las 24 h. En la salinidad de 15 ups, sobrevivió el 50 %. Las concentraciones de 2, 5 y 10 ups demostraron 100 % de supervivencia hasta la fase de adulto. La supervivencia de larvas del estadio IV en los tratamientos 2, 5 y 10 fue del 100 % y en 15,18 y 22 ups disminuyó a 50, 80 y 100 %, respectivamente (p˂ 0,05). Las diferentes concentraciones salinas no afectaron significativamente la ovoposición. La eclosión solo se presentó en las concentraciones de 0,3; 2; 5 y 10 ups. Los huevos ovopositados en concentraciones de 15, 18 y 22 ups no eclosionaron hasta que fueron transferidos a agua dulce con porcentajes de eclosión de entre el 80 y 90 %. Conclusiones: Los embriones de Ae. aegypti poseen una amplia plasticidad para soportar cambios drásticos de temperatura y salinidad. El control efectivo de sus poblaciones debe incluir la revisión de charcas o reservorios que contengan aguas salobres hasta 18 ups.

ABSTRACT Oyster or rock oyster (Striostrea prismática) is a bivalve mollusk highly appreciated among traditional seafood in several Latin American countries. Uncontrolled capture and lack of techniques for its culture, threaten their growth and conservation, as a decrease in its population has been reported. This review highlights critical aspects of its biology, ecology, catching activity and potential use in aquaculture. Its presence is registered as a fossil, and its identification is crucial because of its similarity to other species of ostreids. The population structure and its abundance in natural banks are associated with depth, substrate, dynamics of exposure and local environmental conditions. The reproductive activity and gametogenesis vary from an annual increase to continuous reproduction related to its location latitude. The size at first maturity is similar in both sexes and achieves about nine cm in less than a year. In culture experiments, diets in breeding stocks have been studied, resulting in trochophore larvae and “D” larvae, at 12 and 24 h after fertilization. Shell fixation has been achieved in natural collectors, but their culture has not been developed yet. The species is used as an indicator of pollution, associated with microalgae causing harmful outcrops. There are no precise records of its catch, as it is reported in combination with other ostreids species. For its conservation and sustainable exploitation, it is necessary to increase research on its biology to implement management programs and developing culture techniques.

ABSTRACT One of the most important domains in aquaculture is Macrobrachium, since it represents one of the most cultured crustacean genus worldwide. Description of the authors that study and publish on the subject constitutes a solid contribution to the knowledge of this genus. Indicators of productivity, visibility, relevance, sex and co-authorship of the authors were collected from the Scopus database for the period 1980-2016 to describe the Macrobrachium domain. Conceptual mapping techniques were used to visualize co-author relationships. The greatest amount of contributions to knowledge of the genus Macrobrachium was shown to come from researchers in China, Brazil, USA and India. Only seven women are among the most productive and relevant authors. Multiple co-author networks exist in which the most relevant researchers are the center. Many networks appear to be closed groups with little interaction between external groups or researchers.

ABSTRACT In order to provide information on the development status of the Macrobrachium genus study in Latin America, the results of the scientometric analysis of 161 documents published between 1976 and 2016 in journals of the region, managed from the PERIODICA database, are presented. The current status of the genus Macrobrachium is described in the above geographical area. Results are presented on the years of generation of articles, species studied, main themes treated, journals, most representative authors, countries and language. The most productive countries are Brazil and Mexico. The contents were written in Portuguese as the preponderant language, followed by Spanish. The main topics covered are culture, ecology, food-nutrition, physiology and reproduction, and the least discussed were biology, pathology, food technology, genetics, molecular biology and behavior. The most studied species are M. rosenbergii, M. acanthurus, M. carcinus and M. amazonicum. The most representative authors are V.L. Lobao, W.C. Valenti, J.V. Lombardi and C. Graziani.

ABSTRACT The freshwater shrimp genus Macrobrachium is highly diverse, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, and of considerable commercial importance in many countries. Here we present the results of an analysis of the scientific production regarding Macrobrachium published between 1980 and 2016 in the database Web of Science. The evaluated indicators were key words and authors producing the scientific literature about this genus. Concept maps and cluster analysis techniques were used to display the relationships between them. The results of the study visualize the temporal development of scientific knowledge of the genus Macrobrachium and describe the development of authorship networks during 36 years study period. Moreover, the results of the analysis show emerging research trends in the field of Macrobrachium studies.

The scientific interest in the genus Macrobrachium was not only from a biological aspect, but also from economic aspect. This paper analyzed the patents identified in several databases using the keyword Macrobrachium. Patents were selected when a species of Macrobrachium was mentioned in main title. The total number of identified patents was 131, of which Chinese authors and institutions have produced more than 90%. Topics addressed refer to culture technologies (41%), nutrition and feeding (26%), reproduction technologies (19%) and pathological diagnosis and treatments (14%). Patents are mainly directed for M. rosenbergii (71%), M. nipponense (28%) and M. superbum (1%). Until now, it has not been attempts to generate patents to American continent species.

El interés científico por las especies del género Macrobrachium no ha sido solo desde el aspecto biológico, sino también económico. El presente trabajo analiza las patentes detectadas en diversas bases de datos utilizando la palabra clave "Macrobrachium". Se incluyeron las patentes que mencionaran en el título principal a alguna especie de Macrobrachium. Se encontraron 131 patentes, de las cuales instituciones y autores chinos han producido más del 90%. Las temáticas abordadas se refieren a las tecnologías de cultivo (41%), nutrición y alimentación (26%), tecnologías de reproducción (19%), y diagnóstico patológico y tratamientos (14%). Las especies a las que son dirigidas las patentes son M. rosenbergii (71%), M. nipponense (28%) y M. superbum (1%). No se ha publicado ninguna patente para especies del continente americano.

The red claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus is native to freshwater habitats of northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Its high reproductive and adaptive capacity in different environments allows it to be cultivated, where escaped individuals have established wild populations in countries far from their natural range. In the late 90's and beginning of the 21st century, this crayfish was introduced illegally along the coast of southern Jalisco. Mismanagement led to escape and dispersion. Currently there are wild crayfish in the Cajón de Peñas Reservoir and surrounding streams in northern Jalisco, Mexico. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of C. quadricarinatus in fisheries in this area of Jalisco and analyze its importance in generating economic benefits for fishermen, comparing these results with those of the fishery for M. americanum, whose fishery is traditional. To catch specimens, traps were set for 24 h in the La Sanja Stream and the Cajón de Peñas Reservoir. The results of the survey showed that C. quadrica rinatus is an important part of the crustacean catch in this area: 32% of the total catch in the stream corresponded to C. quadricarinatus and the rest to M. americanum. While 85% of the catch in the dam corresponded to C. quadricarinatus, only 15% referred to M. americanum. Crayfish fishing in the reservoir is now an important part of the productive activity of local families dependent on fishing. The ecological consequences of wild crayfish proliferation remain to be studied.

La langosta australiana de agua dulce Cherax quadricarinatus es un crustáceo nativo de ríos del norte de Australia y Papua Nueva Guinea. Su alta capacidad de reproducción y adaptación a diferentes ambientes le ha permitido establecer poblaciones silvestres en países lejanos a su área de distribución natural. A fines de los años 90 y comienzo del año 2000, este crustáceo se introdujo ilegalmente a lo largo de la costa del sur de Jalisco, México. La mala gestión motivó la fuga y dispersión de este crustáceo. Actualmente, se encuentran ejemplares en el embalse Cajón de Peñas y arroyos circundantes en el norte de Jalisco. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la presencia de C. quadricarinatus en las capturas realizadas en la zona de Jalisco, y analizar su importancia en la generación de beneficios económicos para los pescadores, en comparación con la pesquería de M. americanum, que es una actividad tradicional. Para la captura de los especímenes, las trampas se colocaron durante 24 h en el arroyo La Sanja y en el embalse Cajón de Peñas. Los resultados mostraron que esta especie es parte importante de la captura de crustáceos en esta área. El 32% de la captura total en el arroyo correspondió a C. quadricarinatus y el resto a M. americanum. Mientras que el 85% de la captura en el embalse, correspondió a C. quadricarinatus y 15% a M. americanum. La pesca de esta langosta en el embalse es un componente importante de la actividad productiva para el sostenimiento de las familias locales. Sin embargo, no han sido aún investigadas las consecuencias ecológicas de su proliferación en los ríos y embalses de la región.
